Underappeciated Minds

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread inability to

explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the

hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and

easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”

Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

To the general public, when they think of engineering, they think of individuals who are more reserved, and are constantly on their computers crunching numbers, or have the impression that engineers are individuals who didn't make the cut for more glamorous jobs. Regardless of whether there's truth in those statements, I feel like engineers in general may have the brains to solve an engineering problem but may not be able to sell themselves or their ideas well. The lack of self-expression and communication will lead to their jobs being undervalued.

  1. I agree with the sentiment that engineers tend to not be able to sell themselves or their ideas well given that such ideas can be literally rocket science which will be hard to express effectively without the dilution of the idea.
